What are the steps for administering IV piggyback?Lower the primary IV solution bag using the extension hook. Ensure piggyback mini bag is hung above the primary IV solution bag. Position of the IV solutions influences the flow of the IV fluid into the patient. The setup is the same if the medication is given by gravity or through an IV infusion pump.
Which of the following is the proper position of hanging the piggyback container on the IV pole?22. Hang piggyback container on IV pole, positioning it higher than primary IV according to manufacturer's recommendations. If necessary for the particular infusion pump in use, use the metal or plastic hook to lower primary IV fluid container. If using gravity infusion, primary IV fluid container must be lowered.
Where do you connect the piggyback to primary tubing?Connect the piggyback tubing to the primary tubing at a Y-port below the level of the primary clamp. For needle-less systems, uncap the port and connect the two tubes. For needle systems, clean the port with an alcohol swab and insert the needle of the secondary system. Secure connection with tape.
